My Favorite Woody Allen Films

A friend of mine asked me for a list of my favorite Woody Allen films today so I thought I'd just post it. I just went off of films he directed so neither THE FRONT or PLAY IT AGAIN SAM are on the list, though I like them both quite a bit(especially THE FRONT). I also left off Woody's entry in NEW YORK STORIES. Don't care for that much, I prefer Scorsese's segment. I haven't cared too much for his output of late, but I must admit to not having seen WHATEVER WORKS yet. I also haven't seen CASSANDRA'S DREAM, which I have some interest in. Not a huge fan of MATCHPOINT, though I know it is a much heralded recent film from him...

1. Manhattan(1979)
2. Annie Hall(1977)
3. Crimes and Misdemeanors(1989)
4. Purple Rose of Cairo(1985)
5. Another Woman(1988)
6. Sleeper(1973)
7. Bananas(1971)
8. Interiors(1978)
9. Husbands and Wives(1992)
10. Broadway Danny Rose(1984)
11. Stardust Memories(1980)
12. Hannah and Her Sisters(1986)
13. Sweet and Lowdown(1999)
14. Manhattan Murder Mystery(1993)
15. Zelig(1983)
16. Radio Days(1987)
17. Deconstructing Harry(1997)
18. Love and Death(1975)
19. Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex...(1972)
20. Hollywood Ending(2002)

Bob You should really think about specializing your blog to Movie lists or something. It's soooo fun.

Hannah and her Sisters
Annie Hall
Radio Days
Crimes and Misdemeanors
Purple Rose of Cairo
Manhattan Murder Mystery

Ack. I forgot Bullets over Broadway. I'd probably put that before MMM...

Yeah I may have to change it to an all list blog or something. I'm afraid then I'd be tempted to make a "non-list" entry. I think I'm just totally in list mode now. Lists are comforting to me for some reason...

Great list Jeff! I totally understand you not digging HOLLYWOOD ENDING. Not sure why that one still makes me laugh. Same with SMALL TIME CROOKS, but they both make me chuckle somehow. Funny, this Woody Allen list started because my friend and I were talking about Tarantino having put ANYTHING ELSE on his top 20 films since 1992 list.
I don't remember it at all, but in looking at the trailer, it looks like it would irritate me. And don't get me started on JADE SCORPION or SCOOP. Frickin' terrible!

BP-nice top 5! I like the inclusion of INTERIORS. That movie doesn't get nearly enough attention. I remember reading an interview with John Waters wherein he said something to the effect that he liked his Woody "serious as a heart attack" and named INTERIORS and ANOTHER WOMAN(& a few others) his favorites.

Broadway Danny Rose has always been my favourite and each time I watch it gets better and better. Give it another go! Like most Allen fans I would be the first in the queue to watch all his films as they were released up until Sweet and Lowdown. Do give Broadway Danny another go. "Uno. Two. Agita!"
