Favorite Film Discoveries of 2012 - Dshanya Reese

Dshanya Reese (@lolareels) lives in Austin and is waiting to learn the secrets of Gabe Kaplan. While she waits, she's watching a lot of repertory screenings at the Alamo Drafthouse and spending serious money importing Korean films. You can see lists of what she watches at

New discoveries of 2012:

The Catcher (1972)
Jan-Michael Vincent, Bounty Hunter

Confessions of a Dog (2006)
My sole post-2000 entry on the list. The film was banned in Japan for many years because of its indictment of the criminal justice system. It contains the most breath-taking final scene I’ve watched this year. Don’t let the run time discourage you from watching this film.

Convicts 4 (1962)
Ben Gazzara stars in a “how do I cope in prison” drama. Go for the touching story, stay for the random appearances of 1960s character actors (Rod Steiger, Vincent Price, Ray Walston, Broderick Crawford, Stuart Whitman, Sammy Davis Jr, etc…)
Available from Warner Archive: HERE

Forever Female (1953)
This may be slightly better than ALL ABOUT EVE. The story of an aging actress who is now too old to play the roles she really covets.

H-Bomb (1971)
International intrigue…..Thailand style! Stars Christopher Mitchum (who eerily looks just like his father) and Olivia Hussey.

A Hero Never Dies (1998)
The story of a Chinese gang war as told by Johnnie To. Expect non-stop action!

Merrily We Go To Hell (1932)
A rom-com which warns us all to beware of drunken playwright wannabes with actress ex-girlfriends.

Obaltan aka Aimless Bullet (1961)
Riveting Korean drama that asks “What would you do to support your family … even if you have an awful toothache?”.

Sam Whiskey (1969)
Burt Reynolds mugs for the camera in this western comedy. Is Angie Dickinson nude in this film?

Winter Kill (1974)
Fantastic TV movie about a serial killer on the loose. Andy Griffith plays…..a sheriff.
