Underrated '86 - Arik Devens

Arik Devens is an iOS developer at Fitbit in San Francisco. In his spare time he’s attempting to watch the entire Criterion Collection, which he writes about at Cinema Gadfly ( This year he started a podcast where he trades watching Criterion films with his friends, for watching anything they want him to see. It’s confusingly also named Cinema Gadfly (, which is now part of the Criterion Cast Network.

Check out his underrated '96 list here:
The Great Mouse Detective
I love Disney films, and I'm completely obsessed with anything Sherlock Holmes, so it's like they made this one just for me. For some reason this gets overlooked these days, and it's a shame, as it's absolutely great!
Jumpin' Jack Flash
Of all of these, this is probably the only one that's truly underrated. For some reason people don't dig this film, which is crazy to me. I've loved it since I first saw it as a kid on New Years Eve.
Project A-ko
This was the anime that first got me hooked on the medium. The story makes absolutely no sense, but it makes no difference. It's a funny, weird, complicated, and beautifully animate film. Plus the action is awesome.
The Transformers: The Movie
People forget, thanks to the terrible Michael Bay films, but this animated version is awesome. The soundtrack, which includes Weird Al's Dare to be Stupid during an action scene, is wonderful. The cast is insane, featuring the voices of Leonard Nimoy, Judd Nelson, Robert Stack, John Moschitta, Jr., and Eric Idle. Plus this was Orson Welles last film.
River's Edge
The first time I saw this I couldn't believe I'd never heard of it before. Crispin Glover, Keanu Reeves, AND Dennis Hopper? What a weird creepy film this is, and I love every second of it.
